No More Frequent Glucose Monitoring & Insulin Injections

The βO2 system is a bioartificial pancreas that can be implanted subcutaneously. The βO2 system which biologically regulates glucose levels in Type I diabetic patients has two major components:
  • O2 generator

  • Insulin generator - contains Islets of Langerhans, immune protection material and two membranes.
The insulin generator is based upon a flat geometry, where the outer surface is an immuno-isolated surface and the inner membrane is made of a gas-permeable material. The outer membrane allows for glucose inflow and insulin outflow. The space between the two membranes contains the Islets of Langarhans embedded within a special hydrogel matrix. The Islets sense the glucose and secrete only the appropriate amount of insulin required to returning the glucose level to normal.

The device is implanted subcutaneously in a minimal invasive procedure.

The product has been tested and the concept validated in pre-clinical experiments in small animals. Data demonstrate the ability of the βO2 to help return blood glucose to normal levels in a diabetic rat after subcutaneous implantation.
